Countdown: The Top Ten Videos You Need to Watch for an Instant Attitude Adjustment, or to Help You Cope With Pain or Illness

Having a tough day? For those of us struggling with chronic pain or illness, that can be just about every day. But really, anyone can use a pick me up.

I have your back. Here’s my countdown of the top ten videos to provide much-needed distraction from whatever life’s throwing at you. They’re my go tos when I need something to make me smile. May they do the same for you.

  1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail — Modern Trailer

Somehow, someone came up with a way to take a movie that ranks among the funniest ever made and turn it into a historical action flick. From the music to the clever cutting, this faked up preview is a joy to watch. It also reminds you of what made the original so great. And if you’ve never seen it, well, this will make you want to.

  1. Hugh Laurie on Ellen

When you have a great badonk-a-donk you can’t help flossing. Who wouldn’t be chuffed to bits about that? Ellen and Hugh Laurie play off each other in this game of British vs. American slang, both at their funny best.

  1. Winnie the Pooh and Piglet — The More it Snows

Even if you’re not a huge fan of the Disney version of Pooh, you can’t help but smile at this rendition of the song. It may be the “tiddley pum” part that Piglet sings so well. Or maybe it’s the snowy scenery. But whatever it is, it’s an instant mood lightener.

  1. James Veitch replying to spam

Ever considered replying to one of those absurd spam emails from a Nigerian prince? Me neither. But this guy does just that. As the email chain unfolds before you, I dare you to not get a case of the giggles. Which isn’t as good as the case of gold and diamonds this spammer promises, but still…

  1. The 2,000 year old man

He was a caveman, loves nectarines and never runs for a bus. How can you watch this goofy little guy without cracking a smile? Oh, and he’s the invention of the hilarious Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner.

  1. Snoop Dogg and the famous lizard escape

Take a baby iguana, a whole lot of snakes, and narration by Sir David Attenborough…I mean, er, Snoop Dogg, and the result is a funny take on a viral hit from the Planet Earth series. The little lizard makes one narrow escape after another, and Snoop Dogg has something to say at each dramatic moment.

  1. Matty the baby sloth

Those smiles. That slower than slow way of moving. Sloths have to be some of the cutest animals in the world. Baby sloths…cuteness times ten. And this baby sloth isn’t just cute. He’s kind. Watch him hand over one of his favorite treats, and your heart will melt.
  1. Benedict Cumberbatch-otter matchups

Fans have decided that Benedict Cumberbatch looks like an otter. Several pics have been making the rounds to prove it. So the Graham Norton Show went one better and set up more shots with a real live Cumberbatch. If you love otters (and who doesn’t?), Benedict or giant teddy bears, this is the clip for you. I’ve watched it many times and it still makes me wipe away tears of laughter.

  1. Baby discovers chocolate cake

If you’ve never watched this, you’re in for a treat. It’s the look on the baby’s face that makes this one of the cutest and funniest home videos ever. Also, there’s the midpoint where she has just enough chocolate on her upper lip to look like Charlie Chaplin.

And now, the number one best video to chase away the blues and put a smile on your face …

  1. Old movie stars dance to Uptown Funk

No matter how low you’re feeling, this video will turn your frown upside down. Featuring such old time stars as Shirley Temple, Fred and Ginger, and the three stars of “Singin’ in the Rain,” this toe tapping extravaganza is the perfect antidote to the toughest of times. Watch it and feel your heart lift. Uptown Funk indeed.
